Inland Checkpoints Essential for Ghana’s Security, Says Immigration Official

Volta region: Mr Faisal Disu, Acting Deputy Comptroller-General for Operations at the Ghana Immigration Service, has emphasized the crucial role of inland checkpoints in national security, countering the perception that they cause public inconvenience. Speaking to the Ghana News Agency following a working visit to the Volta Region, Mr Disu detailed his tour, which began on Sunday and included key operational areas such as Aflao, Akanu, Batume, Afegame, and Sogakope.

According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Disu explained the concept of inland borders and their importance in response to growing public calls for checkpoint removal. He highlighted the strategic significance of areas like Asikuma and Sogakope, which are designed to intercept movements from various entry points. He noted that Ghana's border communities often share close ties with neighboring countries, facilitating frequent cross-border movement that poses monitoring challenges.

Mr Disu revealed that inland checkpoints have been instrumental in crime prevention and national security operations, citing examples of arrests made at these checkpoints, including individuals on security watchlists and those involved in narcotic trafficking. He shared a notable success where a suspect linked to the murder of two policemen in Kasoa was apprehended through inland checkpoint operations.

He also addressed concerns about misconduct and poor public relations by acknowledging lapses and assuring corrective measures. Mr Disu emphasized the importance of officers respecting local customs and maintaining professionalism, and announced strengthened community engagement initiatives to improve relations. He issued a stern warning to personnel who fail to meet standards, promising severe sanctions for any officer who disrespects the public or disregards procedures.

In his closing remarks, Mr Disu apologized to residents for any inconvenience caused and assured the public of the Service's commitment to enhancing operations while ensuring national security.
