Accra: Executive Secretary of the Inter-Ministerial Coordinating Committee (IMCC) on Decentralisation, Dr. Gameli Kewuribe Hoedoafia, has called for Ghana to transition from policy formulation to the actual implementation of its decentralisation agenda. Speaking at a high-level meeting of the IMCC chaired by Vice President, Professor Naana Jane Opoku-Agyeman, Dr. Hoedoafia emphasized the importance of translating the approved National Decentralisation Policy and Strategic Framework for 2026 to 2030 into tangible local results.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Hoedoafia highlighted the immediate priority of ensuring the policy produces measurable outcomes at the local level. He noted that the Secretariat has been working with various Ministries, Departments, Agencies, and other stakeholders to prepare for implementation, with significant progress in legislative and administrative reforms.
Dr. Hoedoafia also underscored the importance of public awareness and engagement, stating that citizens must be informed and involved in the decentralisation process to ensure ownership and accountability. He stressed that effective decentralisation requires not only institutional arrangements but also active citizen participation.
The Executive Secretary outlined the critical phase that the reforms have entered, given the cross-sectoral nature of decentralisation. He emphasized that successful implementation will require coordinated action across government and sustainable financing to align mandates and actions across various entities.
Dr. Hoedoafia concluded by stating that the issues before the Committee aim to establish the necessary structures to achieve the objectives of the national decentralisation framework. He mentioned that the technical committee has already considered these matters and is presenting them to the IMCC for strategic policy direction and decision.
