Ibrahim Mahama’s Journey from Transporter to Cement Mogul

Takoradi:The idea for Dzata Cement was conceived by business mogul Ibrahim Mahama after visiting a cement plant in Takoradi while working as a transporter for mining companies. This visit sparked his interest in cement production, leading to the establishment of Dzata Cement.

According to Ghana Web, Mahama's interest was piqued when he followed his trucks into the GHACEM facility in Takoradi to learn about cement manufacturing. This experience convinced him of the feasibility of building a cement plant in Ghana.

Mahama credited the Akufo-Addo government and Alan Kyerematen for supporting Dzata Cement. He was further encouraged after acquiring a MAN Diesel business and learning from an employee that constructing a cement plant was similar to building a flour mill. This led to discussions with Haver and Boecker in Germany, which provided guidance for the plant's structure.

With a solid plan, Mahama approached banks and secured their support to begin construction. However, the project initially stalled due to overwhelming pressures, but encouragement from his younger brother and others helped him persevere.

The company initially imported cement to test its equipment and recruited experienced personnel to establish operations. Financial challenges arose when funds were insufficient to clear imported cement, but support from distributors helped the company continue.

Ultimately, the combination of technical expertise, financial support, distributor assistance, and government backing contributed to the successful establishment of Dzata Cement.
