Accra: Nigerian content creator, public speaker, and HIV awareness advocate Chika Wonder has shared some of the discrimination he has endured since publicly disclosing that he is living with HIV. Speaking during an episode of The Honest Bunch Podcast on August 4, 2026, Chika recounted an experience where he was denied the opportunity to use a microphone to testify in church because leaders feared other members would not want to use it after him.
According to Ghana Web, Chika explained that some pastors unknowingly contribute to the stigmatization of people living with HIV by publicly identifying them during church services. He described instances where pastors would call out individuals with HIV during prayers, leading to further isolation as fellow congregants would avoid sitting near them.
Chika also highlighted that he faced discrimination beyond the church. He recalled an incident at a barber's shop where, despite bringing his own tools, he was refused service because other customers objected to his presence. Similarly, at a restaurant, he was served in a plastic cup rather than the standard glass, due to unfounded fears of transmission.
The most hurtful experiences, Chika revealed, came from those closest to him. He recounted how his brothers refused to eat food he prepared, despite his efforts to foster family unity. Additionally, one of his brothers, who worked as a barber, barred him from visiting his shop following his public announcement about his HIV status.
Reflecting on these experiences, Chika emphasized the ongoing challenge of stigma, which persists despite his efforts to educate others about the realities of HIV transmission.
