President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has expressed delight after having a feel of the 2022 Fifa World Cup trophy over the weekend.

The trophy arrived in Ghana on Saturday, September 3 for a two-day tour, courtesy of Coca-Cola, and was led by French World Cup winner David Trezeguet, who serves as FIFA’s Ambassador for the World Cup trophy tour.

The trophy was presented to the president at the Jubilee House.

“We grew up, my generation, seeing Brazilians holding the World Cup time and time again. It never occurred to me that I will be in the position as Pele to hold the cup,” Akufo-Addo said amidst laughter.

Earlier, at a dinner ceremony held in Accra as part of the tour, President Akufo-Addo said in a speech delivered by Chief of Staff Frema Osei Opare that Ghana will be the first African country to win the World Cup.

“We, who were the first to gain our freedom and independence from colonial rule, will be the first to bring the World Cup to Africa.

“I am of the firm conviction that Ghana will not only participate in the competition but will make the whole nation and by extension the African continent proud, with a great performance,” he said.

Ghana qualified for this year’s edition in Qatar and will compete in the group stage against Portugal, South Korea, and Uruguay.

The 2022 World Cup has been scheduled to kick off from November 20 to December 18.
