Accra: Deputy Attorney General and Minister of Justice, Dr. Justice Srem-Sai, has revealed that he has received death threats following the conviction of businessman and immediate past New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Chairman Wontumi. Speaking in an interview on JoyNews on August 17, 2026, Dr. Srem-Sai, who was involved in the prosecution of the case, said the threats have increased since Wontumi was convicted.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Srem-Sai stated that the threats have come in various forms, including threats to kill him. "I have received threats, and it has actually gone up [since Wontumi's conviction]. The two witnesses are being threatened every day, and even the police investigators who testified and all were threatened," he revealed.
Dr. Srem-Sai explained that individuals issuing such threats often target lawyers, prosecutors, judges, and other persons involved in sensitive cases due to their work. Although he acknowledged that threats are a regular part of the job, he emphasized that he takes each one seriously. "People threaten you with all manner of things, and we receive such threats every day. The mere fact that you are doing your work can cause someone to just hate you, and some threaten violence, death, and all manner of things," he said.
The state attorney further disclosed that some threats extend beyond mere words, with some individuals attempting to carry them out. "Some even try to carry them out, you know, but it is not everything that we talk about. Every day, someone somewhere is unhappy," he disclosed.
Dr. Srem-Sai asserted that he would not allow the threats to affect his work or influence decisions in criminal cases, noting that yielding to such threats could encourage individuals to use intimidation to avoid punishment. "I don't think it is important to follow because when we do that, it means people will use such threats to secure freedom and continue to do that which the law prevents," he noted.
He also remarked that threats are not limited to the Wontumi case, explaining that lawyers and judges handling other serious criminal cases also face similar situations. "It's not only me. Attorneys receive such threats every day, not only in these cases, but in others like murder and robbery cases. Judges receive their share of the threats," he revealed.
Despite the threats, Srem-Sai expressed confidence in his safety and his determination to continue his work. "God is the protector of man, and I believe God protects me as well," he said.
