Accra: The Huni-Valley Senior High School (SHS) in the Prestea Huni-Valley Municipality of the Western Region has marked its 50th anniversary with a well-attended durbar. The event was themed '50 Years of Excellent Education: The Role of Stakeholders'.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Haruna Iddrisu, the Minister of Education, emphasized the importance of schools in shaping the future of society by cultivating positive mindsets in young people. He highlighted the strategic role of senior high schools in promoting values such as patriotism, hard work, honesty, and self-discipline.
Mr. Iddrisu mentioned that instilling good moral values in students helps them grow into responsible adults who can face challenges without compromising their principles. He posed a critical question regarding the school's future: whether HUNIVASS will continue to be seen as a school that upholds the principle of 'Mind is Might', the school's motto, in the next 50 years.
He expressed concern about the diminishing national character orientation among young people and noted that sectional interests were eroding national identity and values. He stressed the need for secondary schools, backed by stakeholders, to play a pivotal role in reversing this trend.
Justice Kweku Tawiah Ackaah-Boafo, a Justice of the Supreme Court of Ghana, praised HUNIVASS for its role in educating many individuals who hold significant positions in the economy. He acknowledged the contribution of educators, the government, parents, and policymakers in supporting the school's success.
Justice Ackaah-Boafo also highlighted the opportunities and challenges presented by technology in the digital age, urging young people to use these tools wisely for learning and innovation.
Mr. Daniel Aidoo, the Headmaster of Huni-Valley SHS, expressed gratitude to the founders, past heads, alumni, staff, and stakeholders for their efforts in making the anniversary celebration possible. He outlined challenges facing the school, including inadequate infrastructure and resources, and appealed for support to address these issues.
Mr. Robert Wisdom Cudjoe, Member of Parliament for the Prestea Huni-Valley constituency, assured that provisions had been made for buses to the constituency, and expressed confidence that HUNIVASS would receive one. He also promised to donate computers to the school's laboratory and address infrastructure concerns.
Nana Kwabena Amponsah IV, Chief of Bosomtwi Divisional Area, commended the school's dedication to education and encouraged students to maintain the standard of excellence set by their predecessors.
Huni-Valley SHS, known as Great HUNIVASS, was established on November 15, 1975, to provide quality secondary education in the Western Region and beyond.
