Accra: Mr. Kenneth Gilbert Adjei, the Minister of Works, Housing and Water Resources, has reiterated the Government's commitment to complete the stalled affordable housing projects across the country. He emphasized the urgent need to address Ghana's substantial housing deficit, currently estimated at over 1.8 million units, which is compounded by affordability challenges affecting low- and middle-income earners.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Adjei made these remarks during the Government's Accountability Series Press held at the Presidency in Accra. He highlighted that the rapid urbanization in Ghana has intensified the housing situation, with more than half of the population residing in urban areas. Projections suggest that this could rise to over 72 percent by 2050, significantly increasing the demand for housing in metropolitan centers like Accra, Kumasi, and Takoradi.
The minister noted that the supply of housing has not kept pace with demand, leading to overcrowding, high property prices, and the expansion of informal settlements. This scenario calls for coordinated interventions to address both housing supply and affordability, promoting sustainable urban planning to align with Ghana's changing demographic realities.
Mr. Adjei detailed ongoing projects, such as the 800 housing units under the Kpone Affordable Housing Project at Tema Community 26, which are at various stages of completion. He also mentioned the Oxygen City Housing Project in the Volta Region, initiated by President John Dramani Mahama, which aims to provide 800 modern two- and three-bedroom apartments. This project is envisioned as a well-planned community with essential amenities and is scheduled for completion in June 2027.
The minister further stated that the Ministry has intensified engagement with the selected developer for the completion of the Saglemi Affordable Housing Project. Following the developer selection process led by Deloitte Ghana, the necessary agreements have been signed and are under review by the Attorney-General.
Similarly, the State Housing Company Limited is working on key projects, including the Surge Homes development at Amrahia and the SHC Gardens project, both targeted for completion by the end of 2025, with current progress at 68 percent and 70 percent, respectively.
