Acting Rent Commissioner Frederick Opoku has emphasized the need for accommodation prices near university campuses to align with the income levels of tenants. Speaking on JoyNews' Super Morning Show on May 12, 2026, Opoku highlighted the varying tiers at which landlords and developers operate, which define the market and income groups they serve.
According to Ghana Web, Opoku explained that as producers, landlords begin operating at different tiers, starting from the first and potentially moving up to the fourth. Each tier represents a different level of income group, and landlords may choose to cater to one specific level. He emphasized that stakeholders should avoid consumer exploitation through excessive pricing to ensure sustainability and fairness in their business practices.
Opoku also advocated for the increased use of local building materials, suggesting this approach would help reduce accommodation costs and support the local industry.
