Accra: The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council (GARPC) on Tuesday urged the public to comply with the ban on noisemaking imposed by the Ga Traditional Council.
According to Ghana News Agency, the Council advised religious bodies, political parties, traditional rulers, and civil society organisations in the affected areas to maintain the sanctity of the period which begins May 4 to June 4, 2026.
Rt. Rev. Samuel Kofi Osabutey, Greater Accra Regional Chairman of the Peace Council, noted that any violations of the ban should be reported to the appropriate authorities and managed with restraint. The ban, lasting one month, is observed for reflection, spiritual cleansing, and customary rites within the Ga communities as a precursor to the Homowo festival.
The statement from the GARPC highlighted the cultural and spiritual significance of this observance, emphasizing its role as a vital aspect of the identity and heritage of the Ga people. The Council called on all citizens, residents, and visitors in the affected areas to respect the ban on drumming and all forms of noisemaking during the designated period.
The Council also advised religious bodies to avoid using musical instruments, loudspeakers, and other noise-generating devices in both public and private settings. However, it was noted that political activities, social gatherings, and commercial activities are permissible as long as they do not breach the ban's conditions.
The Peace Council appealed to security agencies and law enforcement bodies to cooperate with traditional authorities to ensure the ban is peacefully observed. They urged all parties to handle any infractions with restraint while promoting dialogue and peace.
Additionally, the Peace Council called on the media to effectively disseminate information across the nation, particularly in rural and peri-urban communities, to ensure that all citizens are adequately informed. This effort reflects the Council's dedication to fostering harmony, tolerance, and mutual respect.
The annual ban by the Ga Traditional Council on drumming and noisemaking, observed from May 4 to June 4, is an integral part of preparations for the traditional Homowo festival. The prohibition covers loud music, musical instruments, funerals, and loud religious services, with enforcement handled by a task force and police to maintain peace and encourage spiritual reflection.
