Accra: The Hijra Club, a faith-based philanthropic organisation, is supporting over 400 university students across Ghana, a board member has disclosed. The beneficiaries include students pursuing medicine, law, engineering, and social sciences, reflecting the Club's commitment to advancing education in the Muslim community.
According to Ghana News Agency, Alhaji Sami Suka-Brimah, a member of the Club's governing board, shared insights after the Hijra Club Ramadan Lectures at the National Mosque Complex in Accra, emphasizing that education is a strategic tool for community transformation. He stated that supporting education is a way of giving back to society, as an educated individual can potentially support others in the future, leading to community growth.
Alhaji Suka-Brimah highlighted that while the number of Muslims entering tertiary institutions has improved, it still falls short of national averages. He called on parents, professionals, and community leaders to take a more active role in supporting young people. He urged every educated Muslim to be concerned about the educational challenges facing the community and contribute in any way possible.
He also encouraged other organisations and individuals to follow the Hijra Club's example by creating scholarship opportunities and mentorship structures for disadvantaged students. He stressed that although the Club is contributing, the responsibility is collective, and increased support for the youth will eventually bridge the educational gap.
The Hijra Club Ramadan Lectures, themed 'The State of Muslim Education in Ghana,' gathered scholars, community leaders, and education advocates to discuss efforts to improve access, quality, and participation in Muslim education.
