Dakar: Multiple Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) winning coach, Herv© Renard, has disclosed that he once rejected the chance to coach the Senegal national team. Renard, who achieved success with Zambia in the 2012 AFCON, stated that he was approached for the Senegal position after resigning as the head coach of the France women's national team.
According to Ghana Web, Renard explained that despite the opportunity, he was influenced by his wife, who is Senegalese, and advised him against accepting the role at that time. He shared this decision-making process during an interview with Radio France International (RFI).
Renard expressed that he remains open to leading the Teranga Lions in the future, as well as any other competitive African team with the potential to vie for trophies. Senegal, under the leadership of head coach Pape Thiaw, recently secured their second AFCON title in 2025 by defeating Morocco 1-0 in extra time.
