Ghana: Ghana Water Limited (GWL) has denied allegations that its staff were threatened or instructed to withhold information on river turbidity and pollution levels. The company said the allegations were made in a video circulating on social media, but described the claims as false.
According to Ghana Web, GWL issued a statement on August 17, 2026, asserting that it conducts its own turbidity tests as part of the water treatment process. The company clarified that treatment plants are shut down when turbidity levels rise beyond safe limits. However, GWL stated it does not possess official data on the condition of natural river bodies. The responsibility for monitoring these rivers and maintaining records on their turbidity levels, GWL explained, falls under the mandate of the Water Resources Commission (WRC) and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).
The company also refuted claims that a journalist was denied access to information at its Kwanyako Treatment Plant. GWL's official records indicate that the journalist did not visit the facility, contradicting the circulating reports. Furthermore, GWL dismissed allegations that the Presidency had directed it to conceal information on river turbidity, labeling such claims as entirely untrue.
GWL urged the public to distinguish between the roles of GWL, the WRC, and the EPA when considering information about river pollution and turbidity. The company also advised caution in treating the claims presented in the circulating video.
