Growing Interest in Legal Education Defended by Paramount Chief

Accra:Paramount Chief and law student Nana Amponsah has defended the rising interest in legal education following the call to the Ghana Bar of 1,568 new lawyers. He emphasized that studying law offers value beyond courtroom practice.

According to Ghana Web, the 63rd Call to the Bar ceremony took place on October 9, 2026, at ICGC Christ Temple in Teshie, Accra, where the newly qualified lawyers formally joined the legal profession.

Nana Amponsah responded to criticism regarding the increasing number of lawyers by asserting that legal education provides essential skills for leadership, governance, and dispute resolution. He highlighted that more than 70% of the new lawyers are already established as professionals, CEOs, businesspeople, heads of institutions, and traditional leaders.

He pointed out that legal knowledge is valuable in various fields, as the law influences almost every aspect of life. Amponsah suggested that families should aim to have at least one member become a lawyer if financially feasible.

As a final-year law student, Amponsah shared that his role as a traditional ruler has underscored the importance of legal understanding in resolving community disputes. He regularly presides over mediation and adjudication, advocating for traditional authority to align with legal principles.

He mentioned the Techiman Traditional Council to illustrate the growing interest in legal education among traditional leaders, where several chiefs and queen mothers, including himself, are pursuing Bachelor of Laws programs.

Amponsah acknowledged the substantial financial and time investment required to become a lawyer but argued that the profession should not be judged solely by training costs or graduate numbers. He noted that legal education offers career opportunities beyond government roles and contributes broadly to society.

He concluded that studying law equips individuals not just for courtroom roles but also with the skills to lead, govern, protect rights, resolve disputes, and contribute significantly to society.
