GRIDCo to establish Centre of Excellence
Accra, Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo), the national electricity transmission company will establishment a Centre of Excellence in Kumasi to help train more professionals in the power sector for Ghana’s socio-economic development.
Mr William Amuna, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of GRIDCo, said the $ 20 million project was being executed by GRIDCo in collaboration with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) with funding from Korea.
He said the KNUST had provided the Land for the project, and that the facility when completed would have electricity museum, residence hall and an outdoor training field.
Speaking at a media engagement on Wednesday in Tema, Mr Amuna said the GRIDCo Centre of Excellence would provide training for all levels of stall in the power sector as well as electricians and technicians in the informal sector.
He said the Centre would be opened to other organisations within and outside Ghana.
Mr Amuna, who gave an overview of the power situation in the country noted that illegal mining activities (galamsey) was threatening transmission line towers in the Atiwa area of the Eastern Region.
He said there were pockets of similar galamsey activities in places like Bole in the Northern Region and Tarkwa in the Western Region.
He said because of the galamsey activities, it had become very difficult to access those areas to carry out maintenance works on transmission lines.
