GRA Launches Investigation Into Missing Containers at Tema Port

Tema:The Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has established a nine-member committee to investigate the disappearance of 28 containers at the Tema Port. The Commissioner-General, Anthony Kwasi Sarpong, initiated this probe following a petition from importers and their representatives on September 29, 2026.

According to Ghana Web, the petition detailed that the containers, which were in various stages of customs clearance, had either gone missing, been transferred to private warehouses, or were moved out of the port without the owners' knowledge. It cited commodities including cyanide, condensed milk, sardines, alcohol, textiles, pharmaceuticals, black pepper, and tomato paste as being involved.

The petition was submitted by agents Elvis Kwabena Awuah and Ibrahim Amadou, along with importer representatives Amadu Diande and Amadou Djiguba. The matter has also been reported to the Tema Regional Police Command, resulting in some arrests and subsequent police enquiry bail.

The committee, chaired by the Commissioner of Customs Aaron Kanor, includes various heads from the GRA, such as Head of Legal Freeman Sarbah and Head of Customs Port Operations Theresa Potakey. The committee's mandate is to verify the petition's claims, determine the containers' locations, and review customs data trails. It will also investigate potential breaches in customs procedures and identify any involved parties, including GRA officers or external collaborators.

The investigation aims to assess any revenue losses and recommend recovery measures, while also addressing allegations of possible cartel activity and misuse of high-ranking officials' names. The committee has been given a 14-day deadline to complete its report, with all relevant stakeholders instructed to cooperate with the investigation.
