Accra: The Customs Division of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) has introduced a two-month amnesty for owners of uncustomed vehicles across the nation, providing an opportunity for them to regularise their documentation without facing penalties.
According to Ghana Web, the amnesty period is scheduled to run from June 1 to July 31, 2026. This initiative aims to promote voluntary compliance among individuals using vehicles that were either illegally imported into Ghana or have incomplete customs documentation. The Customs Division has issued a public notice indicating that all penalties typically imposed when such vehicles are impounded will be waived during this amnesty window. Vehicle owners are encouraged to utilize this period to regularise their documents and evade potential future sanctions.
The GRA has cautioned that following the amnesty's conclusion, a nationwide enforcement initiative will be implemented to locate and seize uncustomed vehicles operating on the country's roads. The statement emphasized that "The Customs Division will undertake a nationwide inspection of vehicles on the roads and impound all uncustomed vehicles."
This measure is part of the GRA's ongoing efforts to enhance customs compliance, mitigate revenue losses, and address the illegal importation and use of vehicles within Ghana. Motorists and vehicle owners are advised to visit the nearest Customs offices during the two-month period to complete the necessary procedures and prevent their vehicles from being confiscated during the planned nationwide operation.
