Accra: Deputy Finance Minister Thomas Nyarko Ampem has expressed confidence in Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson's ability to keep Ghana's economy on a path of stability and growth, assuring Parliament that the government is determined to avoid the economic challenges experienced in recent years. Ampem gave the assurance during a public hearing on the 2024 National Annual Progress Report, held by the Committee on Economy and Development.
According to Ghana Web, Ampem addressed the committee's concerns over economic indicators, such as macroeconomic stability and the debt-to-GDP ratio, which did not portray a favourable picture in 2024. Committee Chairman Eric Afful expressed hope that the 2025 report would reflect significant improvement. Ampem responded by emphasizing the government's commitment to strengthening the economy and preserving recent gains.
'I can give you the fullest assurance from Dr. Ato Forson that he will continue to manage the finances of this country very well in order that we don't see what we saw in 2022, 2023, and 2024 again,' Ampem stated. The Deputy Minister highlighted the implementation of fiscal discipline and monetary policy measures to tackle inflation and support economic growth.
Ampem explained that the government has constrained expenditure, intensified revenue mobilisation efforts, and redirected spending towards sectors capable of driving sustainable growth. He noted, 'If you look at one of the recommendations by NDPC, it is to reinforce monetary policy with fiscal policies so that we can tame inflation, and that is what we've been doing since 2025.'
Additionally, Ampem underscored President John Mahama's commitment to leaving behind a strong economic legacy, insisting that the government will continue working to ensure improved performance across all sectors of the economy.
