Accra: The government, through the Ministry of the Interior, has declared Friday, July 3, 2026, a public holiday. This announcement marks a shift in the observance of Republic Day, traditionally celebrated on July 1.
According to Ghana Web, the decision was communicated by the Minister of the Interior, Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak. The Minister indicated that although Republic Day falls on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, it would be observed on Friday, July 3, to align with Section 2 of the Public Holidays and Commemorative Days Act (Act 601). This legislative provision allows for holidays that fall mid-week to be shifted to Friday, minimizing disruptions in work schedules.
The statement clarified that the President of Ghana, through an Executive Instrument, has authorized this adjustment. The move is aimed at maintaining workflow continuity for businesses and employees by avoiding mid-week breaks. It was also noted that if a statutory public holiday falls on a weekend, it will be observed the following Monday.
The government emphasized that this adjustment does not apply to religious holidays. Celebrations such as Eid Ul Adha, Eid Ul Fitr, and Christmas will continue to be observed on their actual dates, irrespective of the weekday they fall on.
