Accra: The Chiefs and People of Assin Kumasi in the Gomoa West District have held a durbar to celebrate the 2026 Ahobaakese Festival, themed 'Development through Unity,' raising funds for development projects in the town.
According to Ghana News Agency, the festival featured activities such as a general clean-up exercise, clearing of river pathways, drumming by Asafo companies, cultural displays, a children's funfair, family gatherings, and sports events, all leading up to the grand durbar. Earlier, Nana Odziasempa Yaw Tawiah Amponsah III, the Odikro, along with his sub Chiefs, Queen mothers, and family heads, led a procession through the community streets in traditional regalia, receiving cheers from the assembled crowd. The Odikro later received homage from attendees.
In his address, Nana Odziasempa Amponsah expressed gratitude to both past and present governments for infrastructure developments, including a primary school, a KG structure, and connecting the community to the national electrification grid. He highlighted the need for additional facilities, such as teacher's and nurse's quarters and a Junior High School. He explained that the community school, which began in 1942, lacks a Junior High School, forcing children to share facilities with Gomoa Obokrom and undertake long, risky commutes.
The Odikro appealed for government support in constructing a JHS block with teacher's quarters to encourage educators to remain in the town. He also mentioned the need for accommodation to retain health staff at a self-help-built Health Centre and called for aid from NGOs, the District Assembly, and individuals to build nurses' quarters.
On the topic of investments, Nana Odziasempa Amponsah assured potential investors of available land for factories, agriculture, and agri-processing of cassava, palm, and other fruits. He expressed appreciation to the Gomoa West District Assembly, Member of Parliament, Mr. Richard Mensah, who is also the Deputy Minister for Energy and Green Transition, for their support. He commended the community for their contributions to the peaceful festival and encouraged further efforts to enhance the town's development.
