Accra: The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, Ken Ashigbey, has emphasized the necessity of an efficient gold traceability system to prevent illegal gold from infiltrating the formal market. His remarks highlight the ongoing challenges in curbing illegal mining activities in the country.
According to Ghana Web, Ashigbey's comments come a year after the tragic Adansi Asokwa helicopter crash in the Ashanti Region, which resulted in the loss of eight lives, including two ministers of state. The incident underscored the high stakes involved in efforts to combat illegal mining. Ashigbey pointed out that a robust traceability system would bolster accountability in Ghana's gold supply chain and shield the mining sector from the risks associated with unregulated activities.
Speaking on the Citi Breakfast Show, Ashigbey expressed concerns over the inadequate resources allocated to the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources, which is tasked with addressing illegal mining. He argued that the ministry needs increased financial and logistical support to tackle this pressing issue effectively. Highlighting the need for greater enforcement, Ashigbey called for more stringent actions against those involved in illegal mining, cautioning that lack of penalties only serves to embolden offenders.
Ashigbey also urged for the protection of Ghana's water bodies and natural resources, while advocating for the support of legitimate mining operations to ensure they conduct their activities responsibly.
