Tarkwa: The Gold Fields Ghana Foundation is making significant strides in transforming road infrastructure in the Western Region through a substantial investment of US$6.56 million. This investment focuses on two major road projects that aim to improve transportation, boost local economies, and enhance access to healthcare and education in the host communities.
According to Ghana Web, the projects are currently under construction in the Tarkwa-Nsuaem and Prestea-Huni Valley municipalities. These initiatives have garnered widespread commendation from municipal authorities and traditional leaders due to their anticipated socio-economic impact. The Foundation's Board of Trustees recently inspected the ongoing construction of the 2.26-kilometre Budo City-Bogoso Junction Road and the 14.21-kilometre Samahu-Pepesa Road to assess progress and ensure quality delivery.
Managing Director of Gold Fields Ghana, Elliot Twum, addressed the delegation, reaffirming the company's commitment to delivering sustainable development through strategic infrastructure investments. Twum emphasized the company's dedication to uplifting host communities and creating long-term value for residents.
The Budo City-Bogoso Junction Road project, valued at US$1.26 million, is currently 76.84 percent complete and is expected to be delivered ahead of schedule in October 2026. This road aims to ease traffic congestion, improve connectivity, and facilitate trade, education, and access to healthcare. The second project, the US$5.3 million Samahu-Pepesa Road, is 35.84 percent complete and will connect the communities of Samahu, Abekoase, Tebe, Huniso, and Pepesa upon its completion in October 2027.
Local leaders, including the Chief of Huniso, Nana Nvidah, have highlighted the employment opportunities created by these projects for young people and the positive impact on local communities. Ken Ashigbey, CEO of the Ghana Chamber of Mines, called for stronger collaboration among mining companies, local authorities, and traditional leaders to maximize the benefits of mineral resources for host communities.
