Accra: The leadership of the Ghana Olympic Committee (GOC) has met with Mr. Kofi Iddie Adams, Minister for Sports and Recreation, to present a comprehensive four-year strategic plan (2025-2029), aimed at a sustainable sports success.
According to Ghana News Agency, the meeting served as both a policy briefing and a status update on preparations for upcoming international assignments, including the Youth Olympics, the 2026 Commonwealth Games, and the 2027 All African Games. Mr. Richard Akpokavie, GOC President, emphasized a shift in the nation's sporting philosophy, noting the importance of focusing on the 'process' rather than just the 'event.'
Mr. Akpokavie stated, "This plan is our promise to the nation. We are moving beyond wishful thinking and laying a foundation for excellence that will endure." The plan outlines a data-driven approach to athlete development, ensuring consistent and professionalized training cycles.
Mr. Ernest Danso and Mr. Evans Yeboah, Chef the Missions for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games and the Dakar Youth Olympics, respectively, briefed the Minister on preparations concerning Team Ghana, logistics, and fundraising initiatives. The Minister stressed the need for prioritizing long-term investments over last-minute competition funding.
Mr. Adams highlighted the economic potential of sports and the role of major games in enhancing Ghana's global brand. He introduced the Ghana Sports Fund as a solution to funding challenges, noting its future support from a dedicated lottery system.
The Minister assured government support for Team Ghana, urging the GOC to ensure transparent collaboration with stakeholders and engage in a campaign for public and corporate backing. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to ethical governance in sports funding and development.
The meeting was attended by several key figures, including Mrs. Wilhelmina Asamoah, Chief Director of the Ministry, and Mr. Charles Osei Asibey, Communications Director of the GOC.
