GHS15.6bn BoG Operating Loss Sparks Criticism from MP

Accra: Member of Parliament for Tano North and a member of Parliament's Finance Committee, Dr. Gideon Boako, has criticized the Bank of Ghana (BoG) following its significant operational loss in 2025. In the bank's 2025 Financial Statement, released on May 1, 2026, the Central Bank reported a loss of GHS15.6 billion, marking its second-largest loss since 2008.

According to Ghana Web, Dr. Boako, who had anticipated the BoG's loss months in advance, labeled the financial outcome as "a new low" and attributed it to "policy failure." He expressed his concerns via an article on Facebook, questioning the involvement of parliamentarians as spokespersons for an operationally independent central bank. Dr. Boako's critique comes amid attempts by the majority to dismiss the issue as mere political noise.

Dr. Boako further questioned the rationale behind the Central Bank's substantial loss during a non-crisis year like 2025, particularly when the institution had shown notable recovery from the 2022 global economic crisis in the preceding years. He pointed out that the BoG's 2024 financial statement had indicated a gradual recovery with narrowing operating losses, improved Other Comprehensive Income, moderated FX valuation losses, and a stabilizing balance sheet. However, he noted, the arrival of new management at the Bank of Ghana in 2025 appeared to have reversed the progress made.
