Berlin:Ghana's Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has advocated for a significant shift in global health governance. He urged the international community to transition from policies designed for countries to those developed with and implemented under the leadership of participating nations.
According to Ghana Web, Akandoh made these remarks at the World Health Summit 2026 in Berlin, Germany. The summit, themed 'From Crisis to Resilience Innovating for Health,' runs from October 11 to 13 and gathers global leaders from various sectors to discuss innovative strategies for building resilient, equitable, and sustainable health systems.
Akandoh introduced the 'Accra Reset,' a principle within President John Dramani Mahama's governance philosophy, as a framework for transforming global health cooperation. He emphasized the need for countries to have the capacity and authority to determine their own health priorities, moving from dependency to dignity and from fragmentation to solidarity.
The Minister highlighted Ghana's health reforms, including investments in primary healthcare, the Mahama Care initiative, and increased local resource mobilisation for immunisation, as practical steps to strengthen national health systems. He stressed the importance of building resilient health systems through domestic resource mobilisation and local institutional strengthening.
Ghana's efforts in advancing its health sector were recognized at the summit, with a plaque presented to Hon. Akandoh in acknowledgment of the country's leadership in promoting the Accra Reset principles. This recognition underscores Ghana's role in advocating for a development approach that emphasizes dignity, self-reliance, and shared responsibility to build stronger and more sustainable health systems.
