ACCRA: As Ghana approaches its general election, a debate has erupted over political advertisements made by local celebrities, sparking discussions on their influence and effectiveness. Actor Prince David Osei and comedian DKB have both released videos supporting opposing political parties, each emphasizing distinct policy messages.
According to Ghana Web, Prince David Osei, an actor, created an advertisement for the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) in September 2024. The advertisement highlights the party’s digitalization campaign, demonstrating how citizens can purchase prepaid electricity from their phones without needing to visit a vendor. The ad portrays a scenario where the actor’s electricity goes out in the middle of the night, and he quickly restores it using his phone, emphasizing the convenience brought by digital advancements.
In contrast, comedian DKB launched an advertisement on October 16, 2024, for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), focusing on their 24-hour economy policy. The video fe
atures DKB visiting a bank at 3:18 AM to make a withdrawal, underscoring the NDC’s vision for a round-the-clock economic environment. The advertisement has generated significant attention and reactions from both netizens and the NDC itself.
Following the viral spread of DKB’s video, the National Democratic Congress released a statement advising its supporters against creating and sharing unauthorized content during the election period. This move comes amid concerns about maintaining message consistency and avoiding potential miscommunication.
In response to the backlash and the NDC’s statement, DKB has removed the video from all his social media platforms. Despite expressing disappointment over the party’s press release, the comedian reaffirmed his support for former president John Dramani Mahama, urging critics to take a step back and “drink water.”
