Ghana Secures £323 Million Financing for Northern Water and Sanitation Project

Bangkok:Ghana's Finance Minister Cassiel Ato Forson has announced a £323 million financing package for the Northern Ghana Water and Sanitation Project, following discussions with European Investment Bank (EIB) Vice-President Ambroise Fayolle. The meeting was held on the sidelines of the IMF-World Bank Group Annual Meetings in Bangkok, Thailand, on October 16, 2026.

According to Ghana Web, the financing package includes a £68 million grant from the European Commission, a £30 million grant from Invest International—a Dutch government initiative—and a £225 million highly concessional financing facility from the EIB. This combined funding aims to address persistent water shortages and improve sanitation in Tamale, Yendi, and Damongo.

Dr. Forson described the talks with Fayolle as productive and emphasized the project's potential to tackle longstanding water supply challenges while enhancing sanitation services in the three northern cities. The financing arrangement integrates grants and concessional funding to support the development of water and sanitation infrastructure in Northern Ghana.

The project is anticipated to enhance access to reliable water supplies and better sanitation services for the communities involved. However, specific details regarding the implementation timeline and the infrastructure to be delivered were not available at the time of the report.
