Baku:Ghana's expenditure for the 2026 FIFA World Cup is projected to be significantly lower than the costs associated with the 2022 tournament, which had previously sparked public criticism.
According to Ghana Web, the Ministry of Sports and Recreation, headed by Kofi Adams, reviewed and adjusted the budget items submitted by the Ghana Football Association. This initiative aimed to reduce spending and protect taxpayers' funds.
The overall expenditure for Ghana's participation in the 2026 World Cup is estimated at GHS55.08 million, a decrease from the approximately GHS65.93 million spent in 2022. This reduction totals about GHS10.85 million.
Some budget items saw notable decreases, while others remained the same or were adjusted due to changes in personnel. The total delegation size decreased from 87 in 2022 to 69 in 2026. The players' appearance fees remained unchanged at $2,600,000 across both tournaments. However, the management committee's allocation was significantly reduced from $600,000 in 2022 to $250,000 in 2026.
Other reductions include physiotherapists' costs, which decreased from $200,000 for two in 2022 to $120,000 for three in 2026, and the dietician/nutritionist budget, which saw a 60% cut. The purse holder/ministry accountant's budget was reduced by 80%.
Despite these adjustments, the video analysts' budget remained at $100,000, even with the addition of an extra analyst. The forex rates used for these calculations were $1= GHS13 for 2022 and $1 = GHS11.7859 for 2026.
