Accra: Mr Ernest Brogya Genfi, the Deputy Minister of Defence, has praised the Chinese Community in Ghana for its essential contributions to the nation's economic development, cultural interaction, and the strengthening of bilateral cooperation between Ghana and China.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Genfi highlighted the community's role in enriching Ghanaian society both economically and culturally, fostering mutual learning and understanding. These remarks were made during the Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival Gala in Accra, attended by members of the Chinese community, Ghanaian officials, diplomats, and business leaders. The Lantern Festival, marking the conclusion of Chinese New Year celebrations, symbolizes reunion, prosperity, and hope.
The event featured performances by the Anhui Performing Arts Group from China, showcasing cultural expressions that contributed to the festive atmosphere. This year marks the 66th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Ghana and the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Africa, highlighting milestones in China-Africa relations.
Mr Genfi emphasized Ghana's welcoming nature towards diversity and partnerships. He encouraged continued strengthening of ties between Ghana and China, focusing on respect, cooperation, and shared prosperity. He also acknowledged the contributions of Chinese investors and entrepreneurs to Ghana's economy, creating jobs and enhancing trade relations through investments in various sectors.
Mr Genfi urged businesses in Ghana to comply with local laws and regulations to sustain trust and long-term cooperation. He also noted the strong defence and security cooperation between Ghana and China, which includes military training programs and personnel exchanges.
Mr Li Yang, Charg© d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, highlighted the growth in China-Ghana relations and broader China-Africa cooperation. He noted that bilateral trade between China and Ghana had reached record levels, reflecting deepening economic ties.
Mr Li also mentioned initiatives like the China-Ghana Friendship Smart Classroom project and the expansion of Chinese enterprises as examples of the strengthening partnership. He praised the Chinese Community for promoting cooperation and supporting charitable causes.
Furthermore, Mr Li pointed to China's broader engagement with Africa through initiatives under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation and the Belt and Road Cooperation. China plans to extend zero-tariff treatment to 53 African countries with diplomatic relations starting May 1, 2026, aimed at boosting African exports and deepening economic partnerships.
