Ghana Medical Trust Fund Campaigns for Chronic Illness Support in Volta Region

Ho:The Ghana Medical Trust Fund has launched an initiative in Ho, Volta Region, to ensure that the financial burden of chronic illnesses does not hinder patients from obtaining necessary healthcare.

According to Ghana Web, during a town hall meeting attended by traditional leaders, faith-based groups, health professionals, students, and community members, the Fund detailed its mandate, eligibility criteria, and application procedures. This effort aims to increase awareness of the available support for patients and their families.

Chancellor of the University of Health and Allied Sciences, Prof. Lydia Aziator, highlighted the Fund as vital for families burdened by chronic illness costs. She encouraged women to seek medical attention promptly if they notice unusual symptoms and emphasized that stigma should not deter anyone from seeking treatment.

Volta Regional Minister James Gunu urged Metropolitan, Municipal, and District Chief Executives, civil society organizations, and the media to disseminate information about the Fund throughout the region. He also requested health professionals assist patients with the application process, ensuring eligible individuals receive the help they need.

Mr. Gunu emphasized the importance of transparency and accountability to maintain public trust in the initiative and assured the Volta Regional Coordinating Council’s backing for the Fund.

Administrator of the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, stressed that financial assistance must coincide with healthcare infrastructure improvements. This ensures patients receive adequate treatment. She noted efforts to enhance facilities at Ho Teaching Hospital and the University of Health and Allied Sciences to provide specialized care locally.

The Fund's initiative is part of broader efforts to educate the public about its services and reach eligible families who may be unaware of how to apply. The organization encourages public dissemination of information about its support services to help those facing high costs of chronic illness.
