Takoradi: The Ghana Manganese Company Limited (GMC) has announced its ambitious goal to achieve a production capacity of 700,000 tonnes by August this year. This target marks a significant operational milestone for the company as it aims to reach its annual production goal of eight million tonnes.
According to Ghana News Agency, the anticipated boost in production is largely attributed to a reduction in rainfall and the acquisition of new heavy equipment. In a statement signed by Sun Yuanwei, Deputy Managing Director of GMC, the company highlighted its role as Ghana's only manganese miner and exporter, operating the Nsuta open pit mine in the Western Region. Seasonal rains have historically impacted the company's haulage and processing capabilities, causing a decline in shipments between May and July due to wet-season disruptions.
GMC emphasized its commitment to maintaining a low position on the cost curve through operational innovations. "Beyond serving as a critical manganese ore supplier to the global steel industry, the company's high-grade manganese ore is increasingly recognized as a strategic resource for the new-energy battery supply chain," stated Mr. Sun.
The statement further outlined GMC's plans to ensure a stable supply to international markets, aligning with the Government of Ghana's value-addition strategy. This includes the planned manganese refining plant, which is expected to enhance local economic benefits. The company expressed optimism for strong operational performance in the latter half of the year, indicating that it will continue to monitor weather conditions and utilize its high-efficiency fleet to meet its full-year production targets.
