Accra: The Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that Ghana and India have set an ambitious target of doubling their current trade volume to US$6 billion, underscoring the growing economic and diplomatic partnership between the two countries. The announcement was made when Ablakwa received the letters of credence from the new Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, Surinder Bhagat.
According to Ghana Web, the new trade target reflects the confidence both countries have in their longstanding relationship and their shared commitment to expanding economic cooperation. Ablakwa emphasized that the partnership continues to grow from strength to strength, focusing on increasing bilateral trade to the ambitious target. He disclosed that Ghana and India have identified agriculture, information and communication technology (ICT), and pharmaceutical manufacturing as priority sectors for enhanced collaboration.
These strategic sectors are seen as holding significant potential for investment, innovation, and industrial growth. Ablakwa noted that expanding cooperation in these areas will help create employment opportunities for Ghana's youthful population while boosting productivity and economic competitiveness. The Foreign Affairs Minister stressed that the partnership is not solely about increasing trade figures but also about creating meaningful jobs and equipping the youth with future opportunities.
He further elaborated that the strengthened collaboration with India forms part of Ghana's broader vision of driving sustainable economic growth and positioning the country as a leading player in Africa's development agenda. Ablakwa highlighted that Ghana's goal is to anchor its economy on a path of sustainable development through strategic international partnerships that deliver tangible benefits for its people.
Indian High Commissioner to Ghana, Surinder Bhagat, reaffirmed India's commitment to deepening relations with Ghana and expanding cooperation in areas of mutual interest. Bhagat expressed that India highly values its longstanding friendship with Ghana and looks forward to promoting trade, investment, technology transfer, and shared development.
The renewed commitment by Ghana and India is expected to strengthen bilateral relations while opening new opportunities for economic growth, investment, and industrial development.
