Accra: The President of the Ghana Golf Association (GGA), Leonard Kwaku Okyere, has confirmed that preparations are in full swing for the 91st Ghana Open Golf Championship, slated for September 16-19, 2026. The prestigious event will take place at the Celebrity Golf Club, drawing golfers from Ghana and the broader West African sub-region.
According to Ghana Web, Okyere addressed the media during a cocktail event with sponsors in Accra on September 14, 2026. He assured the golfing community that the course is ready, despite the lack of rain affecting the greens. 'I was on the course today at Celebrity, just checking the bunkers and the greens, and I think we're on course. Unfortunately, we haven't had rain, and rain is our first factor, but I think we've done a lot of watering to get the players to enjoy the tournament,' Okyere stated. He highlighted that nearly 250 participants, including around 100 professional golfers from across West Africa, will be competing, along with 150 amateur players.
Vincent Torgah, Captain of the Professional Golfers' Association of Ghana (PGA), expressed gratitude to the GGA for organizing this significant national tournament. He spoke of the enthusiasm and commitment among his fellow professionals as they prepare to represent Ghana. Torgah said, 'The excitement was high for me, and I was hoping that it was the same feeling that I would carry along. Other guys will also do the same thing. And when I came into the country, I realised the spirit was high. They were training hard every day here and there to get themselves ready for the tournament.'
Catherine Fabbi, National Ladies Coordinator for the GGA, encouraged the public to anticipate an exhilarating competition and shared insights into the preparations of female golfers. She mentioned key players like Afi, Wendy Gyan, and Hawa, who are gearing up for the competition. Fabbi stated, 'For the scratch event, I know Afi is preparing very well... The Ghana Open is not just a game; it's an experience. We get to meet, we connect, we share ideas, and then have fun as well.'
The cocktail event served to express gratitude to the sponsors of the 91st Ghana Open, recognising their contributions and introducing them to the golfing community and other participants. It also provided an opportunity for stakeholders to engage and network in anticipation of the upcoming championship.
