Ghana Football Association Considers Kim Lars Björkegren for Black Stars Interim Role

Accra:The Ghana Football Association (GFA) is reportedly contemplating appointing Kim Lars Björkegren, the current head coach of the Black Queens, as the interim coach for the Black Stars. This consideration comes amid mounting pressure to address the men's team's challenging start to their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign.

According to Ghana Web, local media reports suggest that the Swedish coach might be tasked with leading Ghana in the crucial upcoming double-header against Somalia in November. Assisting Björkegren would be Black Stars assistant coach Godwin Attram and Ibrahim Tanko.

The Black Stars have faced a rocky start, suffering back-to-back losses in Group C. They first lost 2-0 to Cote d'Ivoire and then endured a 4-2 defeat at home against The Gambia after initially leading by two goals. These setbacks led to a mutual agreement to terminate Carlos Queiroz's contract, prompting the GFA to urgently seek a new coaching direction.

A search committee, led by former GFA vice-president Fred Pappoe, was formed to find a suitable successor. However, the committee has faced pressure to make a quick decision and recently requested more time due to the volume of applications. Although October 15 was the deadline set to announce a new coach, reports on that day indicated that Björkegren could be recommended for the interim role.

Björkegren is familiar with the Black Stars, having served as an assistant coach prior to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. However, he was not retained after Otto Addo's departure and Carlos Queiroz's subsequent appointment. Currently, Björkegren continues to coach the Black Queens, receiving commendations for his work with the women's national team, which is also preparing for World Cup qualifying play-offs starting November 28.

The prospect of Björkegren handling both the men's and women's teams raises concerns about timing and logistics, given the proximity of their respective crucial fixtures. The GFA has yet to officially announce whether Björkegren will be recommended as the interim coach for the Black Stars.
