Accra: The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association, in collaboration with key stakeholders, has announced the appointment of Carlos Queiroz as the head coach of the senior national team, the Black Stars.
According to Ghana Web, the Portuguese coach, who has previously managed teams such as Real Madrid, Manchester United, and the national teams of Portugal and Iran, will be at the helm as Ghana embarks on its journey to the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to take place in Canada, Mexico, and the United States.
Queiroz brings a wealth of World Cup experience to the role. He successfully led the South Africa national team to qualification for the 2002 FIFA World Cup, guided Portugal to the knockout stage in 2010, and managed Iran during the 2014 and 2018 tournaments. His extensive coaching career also includes roles in Egypt, Oman, Japan, and Qatar.
The newly appointed coach is expected to leverage his extensive experience to prepare the Black Stars for the upcoming World Cup. His immediate task will be to focus on the team's preparations for the tournament, which is scheduled to commence on June 11, 2026.
Ghana's first group match will be against the Panama national team on June 17, 2026, in Toronto, Canada. This will be followed by challenging encounters with the England national team and the Croatia national team in the subsequent group matches.
