Ghana: Ghana and the Netherlands have signed a special Letter of Intent to enhance the fight against illicit drugs and drug markets. The agreement was formalized on Sunday, August 17, 2026, by Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and the Netherlands' Minister of Justice and Security, D.M. Van Weel, during Van Weel's official visit to Ghana.
According to Ghana Web, the agreement builds on the Accra Call to Action, with both nations aiming to provide global leadership in the battle against illegal drug trade. "We hope to offer global leadership on this crucial matter," stated Ghana's Foreign Affairs Minister. Ablakwa emphasized that illicit drugs are not only destroying young lives but also undermining public health in both Ghana and the Netherlands.
The minister further explained that the drug trade is damaging the rule of law and having a significant impact on human rights. He expressed confidence that genuine and reliable international collaboration will be instrumental in eliminating drug markets. Ablakwa also extended his gratitude to the Dutch minister, describing him as a good friend of Ghana.
Both countries are committed to strengthening their cooperation against cocaine, synthetic drugs, and criminal money, reinforcing their joint efforts to tackle these critical issues.
