Accra: Director-General of the Ghana AIDS Commission, Dr. Prosper Akanbong, has announced that the commission is exploring the development of larger condom sizes for Ghanaian men. This initiative is part of the commission's strategy to boost condom use across the nation.
According to Ghana Web, Dr. Akanbong, in an interview with Joy News, highlighted the commission's efforts to enhance condom usage among Ghanaians. He disclosed that initial research indicates a significant reason for low condom usage is the perception that existing condom sizes are inadequate for many Ghanaian men, leading to incidents of condoms bursting. This finding has prompted the commission to consider creating condoms that better accommodate the needs of Ghanaian males.
Dr. Akanbong emphasized the importance of increasing condom use and outlined plans for further research into the factors contributing to the reluctance of men to use condoms. The goal is to develop condoms that are more compatible with the physical needs of Ghanaian men.
As part of the commission's efforts to address this issue, Dr. Akanbong announced the launch of a free condom distribution initiative across the country. This campaign aims to prevent unwanted pregnancies and sexually transmitted infections (STIs) by encouraging broader condom use.
The announcement coincides with the global observance of World Condom Day on February 14, underscoring the importance of safe sexual practices worldwide.
