Accra: Mr Ernest Brogya Genfi, the Deputy Minister of Defence, has expressed gratitude to the Chinese Community in Ghana for their significant contributions to the country's economic development and cultural interactions, enhancing bilateral cooperation between Ghana and China.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Genfi made these remarks during the Chinese New Year and Lantern Festival Gala held in Accra. The event, attended by members of the Chinese community, Ghanaian officials, diplomats, and business leaders, celebrated cultural performances by artists, including the Anhui Performing Arts Group from China. The festival symbolizes reunion, prosperity, and hope in Chinese tradition and marks the conclusion of the Chinese New Year celebrations.
This year marks notable milestones in China-Africa relations, including the 66th anniversary of diplomatic ties between China and Ghana and the 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and Africa. Mr Genfi emphasized Ghana's welcoming environment and the importance of continued cooperation between the two nations, highlighting the role of Chinese investors in various sectors such as manufacturing, retail, hospitality, and mining, which have created numerous jobs and boosted trade relations.
Mr Genfi urged businesses in Ghana to adhere to local laws and regulations, emphasizing that compliance is crucial for maintaining trust and long-term cooperation. The strong relationship between Ghana and China in defense and security cooperation, involving military training programs and personnel exchanges, was also noted for enhancing mutual understanding and professional relationships.
Mr Li Yang, Charg© d'Affaires of the Chinese Embassy, underscored the steady growth in China-Ghana relations and broader China-Africa cooperation. He mentioned that China's expanding economy remains a key global growth contributor and is committed to strengthening partnerships with African nations through trade, infrastructure development, and cultural exchanges. Bilateral trade between China and Ghana has reached record levels, reflecting the deepening economic ties.
Initiatives like the China-Ghana Friendship Smart Classroom project and Chinese enterprises' expansion were highlighted as contributing to Ghana's industrialization and socio-economic development. Mr Li praised the Chinese Community's efforts in promoting cooperation, supporting charitable causes, and fostering people-to-people exchanges.
Furthermore, China's engagement with Africa through initiatives under the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) and the Belt and Road Cooperation aims to support Africa's modernization. Mr Li noted China's plan to extend zero-tariff treatment to 53 African countries with diplomatic ties to China starting May 1, 2026, which is expected to enhance African exports and deepen economic partnerships.
