Accra: The Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), Henry Asante Twum, has revealed that the Executive Council (ExCo) has suggested that Carlos Queiroz should continue as head coach of the Black Stars on a long-term basis. The recommendation follows a thorough assessment of the Portuguese manager's performance at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, leading to the conclusion that he merits remaining in the role.
According to Ghana Web, Asante Twum stated that the GFA is actively working towards finalizing a deal with Queiroz. The council, recognized as the highest decision-making body, has agreed on the coach's continued tenure after evaluating his performance. Asante Twum also confirmed that discussions regarding contract renewal are ongoing, with both parties presenting their proposals, although specific details remain undisclosed.
Moreover, Asante Twum highlighted that the final decision on the contract does not solely lie with the GFA. The Ministry of Sports and Recreation is also involved in the process to ensure that financial commitments are manageable. The ministry's review and approval are necessary since they are responsible for the coach's salary. Asante Twum admitted not knowing the exact details of the offers exchanged between the coach and the GFA.
Reports indicate that negotiations have hit a stalemate, with Queiroz reportedly asking for a $150,000 salary. This situation has led the association to consider alternative options if an agreement cannot be reached, particularly with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers set to commence in September 2026.
