Accra: Mr Kofi Iddie Adams, the Minister for Sports and Recreation, has announced that the Ghana Football Association (GFA) has proposed a budget of $13.7 million for the Black Stars' participation in the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico. The proposed budget, equivalent to GHS146 million, aims to cover various stages of the tournament, including pre-tournament preparations, group-stage participation, and potential progression to the knockout rounds.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr Adams presented the budget details to Parliament's Sports Committee. The proposal allocates $1.23 million for pre-tournament activities, which include a FIFA-approved training camp and international friendlies. The group stage commands the largest portion of the budget, with $6.28 million designated for appearance fees, match bonuses, per diems for players and technical staff, and allowances for additional officials.
Mr Adams explained that expenditure is expected to decrease if the team advances to the knockout stage, as appearance fees will not be paid beyond the group phase. The projected cost for the round of 32 is pegged at $690,000. Subsequent rounds would require $920,000 for the Round of 16, $1.14 million for the quarterfinals, $1.37 million for the semi-finals, and $1.84 million should Ghana reach the final.
Additionally, $310,000 has been set aside for honorariums for management, officials, and support staff. Ghana's 2026 World Cup campaign will commence with a match against Panama, followed by matches against England and Croatia.
