GFA Acknowledges Responsibility for Black Stars’ AFCON Qualifier Struggles

Accra:Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director Henry Asante Twum has stated that it is understandable for the association to be blamed for the Black Stars' poor start in the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers.

According to Ghana Web, Ghana has suffered a difficult beginning to their campaign, losing their first two Group C matches and currently without any points. The Black Stars first faced a 2-0 defeat to Ivory Coast, followed by a 4-2 loss to The Gambia, after initially leading 2-0 at the Accra Sports Stadium. These results have positioned Ghana at the bottom of Group C, intensifying the pressure to keep their qualification hopes alive.

In response to the disappointing performances, the GFA and head coach Carlos Queiroz have mutually agreed to part ways, a decision that was confirmed on October 1, 2026. Asante Twum acknowledged the frustration among supporters and expressed that the GFA accepts responsibility for the situation, admitting that they are "not in normal times."

Furthermore, Asante Twum emphasized that while the association understands the discontent of Ghanaians, they require the support of all stakeholders to address the challenges. The Black Stars are set to face Somalia in a double-header at the Accra Sports Stadium, aiming to revive their AFCON hopes after missing the 2025 tournament in Morocco.
