Accra: Former Ghana Football Association President George Afriyie has raised concerns over the potential appointment of a defensive-minded coach for the Black Stars, suggesting that such a strategy may not be compatible with the traditional style of Ghanaian football.
According to Ghana Web, Afriyie emphasized the importance of the Ghana Football Association's Technical Director in ensuring that the coaching approach aligns with the nation's football identity. He highlighted that while employing a lone striker does not inherently mean a team is defensive, the overall tactical approach should match the skills and characteristics of the available players.
Afriyie referenced Ghana's historical attacking formations, featuring notable players like Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari, and Kwadwo Asamoah, as proof that a one-striker system can still embody an attacking philosophy. He pointed out that the national team's World Cup squad included several wingers, indicating that the team composition did not naturally support a predominantly defensive approach.
Afriyie concluded by noting the structure of the 26-man squad sent to the World Cup, which he believed did not heavily lean towards a defensive strategy, attributing the tactical direction to the coach's decisions.
