Genetic Technique Revolutionizes Infection Detection

Wuhan:A genetic technique that helped identify Covid-19 is now being used in hospitals to make critical, life-saving decisions. In December 2019, virologists in China analyzed samples from patients with severe pneumonia linked to the Huanan Seafood Market in Wuhan. The genetic material did not match any known pathogen, prompting doctors to use metagenomic testing. This method reveals all microorganisms present in a sample, allowing scientists to identify the novel coronavirus resembling other severe pneumonia-causing viruses like MERS.

According to Ghana Web, metagenomics has become increasingly employed in hospitals, aiding in swiftly diagnosing conditions like sepsis and identifying causes of unexplained illnesses. Dr. Charles Chiu, an expert at the University of California San Francisco, has developed a metagenomics test for cerebrospinal fluid, which has already helped identify cases where pathogens were driving symptoms unknown to doctors. For instance, a patient misdiagnosed with meningitis was found to have hepatitis E, allowing for correct treatment and avoiding an unnecessary liver transplant.

The advancement of metagenomics was previously hindered by lengthy analysis times. However, recent technological advancements, such as machines that can sequence DNA in hours and AI tools that process large datasets, are making these tests more accessible. Dr. Niranjan Nagarajan from the National University of Singapore is exploring AI-enhanced metagenomic screening for faster diagnosis and targeted treatment for immunocompromised patients.

Metagenomics could significantly impact public health by providing early warnings of emerging epidemics. A pilot study in London hospitals demonstrated its potential, as the tests identified pathogens not routinely detected, preventing unnecessary surgeries and offering timely alerts on rising virus prevalence. Proactive monitoring, like the sewage analysis in Italy that detected Covid-19 traces before the first confirmed cases, exemplifies how metagenomics can anticipate pandemics.

This pioneering technique, by rapidly identifying infections and facilitating precision medicine, is reshaping how hospitals and public health systems respond to infectious diseases.
