Barekese: The Presiding Member of Atwima Nwabiagya North District Assembly, Mr. Simon Karikari Bonsu, has announced that the decision to locate a 24-hour market in Asuofua was made collectively by the general assembly.
According to Ghana News Agency, Mr. Bonsu stated in an interview that all 25 members of the assembly agreed on this decision during their last general meeting, which was focused on approving the 2026 budget. The decision has sparked controversy among district residents, particularly those in Barekese, who have demonstrated and petitioned the assembly over what they perceive as an alleged relocation of the market project from Barekese to Asuofua. The petitioners argue that the market should remain in its original location.
However, Mr. Bonsu has dismissed these claims as untrue and lacking evidence. He clarified that Asuofua was selected due to its economic and social advantages over other communities. Asuofua's strategic location as the gateway to the area from Kumasi and other regions was a significant factor in its selection. Mr. Bonsu highlighted market viability, social visibility, and security as key benefits of establishing the market in Asuofua, which is planned to include night trading activities.
He urged the demonstrators to be patient and await an official response to their petition, cautioning against actions that could hinder the assembly's developmental efforts. Mr. Bonsu refrained from commenting further on the petition until he had reviewed its contents. Meanwhile, the Asuofua traditional council has expressed appreciation for the assembly's decision to select their town for the 24-hour market facility.
