Accra: The Ghana Environmental Advocacy Group (GEAG) has petitioned the Attorney-General's office to seek justice for the death of 13-year-old Pious Nkansah, who was killed during a confrontation between some youth and security officers at a mining concession in the Nzema-East Municipality in December 2025.
According to Ghana News Agency, the petition, which was copied to the Inspector General of Police, the Minister for the Interior, and other law enforcement agencies, was signed by 722 concerned citizens from Ghana and the Diaspora. The document, dubbed 'Justice for Pious,' was presented by Madam Elizabeth Allua Vaah, the Executive Director of GEAG, who emphasized the need for transparent, accountable, and immediate action regarding the incident.
Madam Vaah highlighted that new evidence had emerged, including a police report identifying the officer alleged to have shot Pious, and a signed post-mortem report confirming the cause of death as gunshot wounds and severe internal injuries. Despite these developments, the earlier decision of nolle prosequi had not been revisited, leaving the family without justice and eroding public confidence in the process.
The Executive Director of GEAG stated that the petitioners were requesting a review and reversal of the nolle prosequi decision, reopening of criminal proceedings against the identified officer, an independent and transparent investigation, and protection and support for the family of the deceased. She expressed confidence that the Attorney-General's office would treat the matter with urgency and seriousness.
Mr. Eric Ogbamey Selby, a family member of the deceased, urged law enforcement agencies to intensify their investigations now that police and medical reports were available, to expedite action on the killing of Pious Nkansah and ensure justice prevails. He also called on the government and traditional rulers to engage with mining companies before activities commence on their lands to prevent similar confrontations.
Madam Sarah Senya Cobbinnah, one of the lead petitioners, participated in the delivery of the petition due to the wrongful death of the young boy and the injustice faced by the affected community. As an advocate for environmental sustainability and social justice, she felt a moral responsibility to act and seek accountability, aiming to ensure the family receives compensation for their loss.
The incident took place on December 13, 2025, at a mining company site at Adelekezo near Dadwen in the Axim District of the Western Region, resulting in the death of Pious Nkansah, also known as Nkrumah, and the destruction of several company properties.
