Galamsey Pit Collapse Claims Two Lives, One Missing in Western North Region

Sefwi Datano:Two individuals have died, and one is missing following a collapse at a galamsey pit in Sefwi Datano, located in the Bodi District of the Western North Region. The victims, identified as Kwaku Charles and Nana Dibi, were reportedly in their early thirties and regularly worked at the mining site where the incident occurred.

According to Ghana Web, the two deceased were working alongside a third individual who remains unaccounted for. The accident prompted immediate action from residents and community members, who rushed to the site to assist in rescue efforts.

An excavator was brought in to aid the operation, but the use of machinery reportedly led to one victim's head being severed during the retrieval process. In response to the incident, Joseph Debrah, a member of the Datano Unit Committee, received a distress call and promptly informed community leaders. These leaders mobilized local youth to participate in the rescue efforts.

The local police in Bodi were also involved in the operation, contributing to the recovery of the bodies, which were then transported to the Juaboso Government Hospital mortuary. The tragedy has left the Sefwi Datano community in mourning and has highlighted ongoing concerns about the hazards of illegal small-scale mining, particularly the risks posed by pit collapses. Further investigations are expected to determine the precise circumstances of the incident.
