Accra: Dr Nana Ayew Afriye, Member of Parliament for Effiduase-Asokore, has called for reparations to the Ga-Dangme State, arguing that the demolition of Makola Market decades ago inflicted lasting economic and social damage on the Ga people. In a Facebook post on August 5, 2026, Dr Ayew Afriye reflected on the historical impact of the Makola Market demolition, recalling accounts from Tema elders who believed the action was deliberately carried out to weaken the Ga State and consolidate control over Accra.
According to Ghana Web, based on those recollections, the action also undermined GA women, many of whom were prominent traders and financiers of businessmen, military generals, and political parties during the Gold Coast and early independence era. "Some reparation by the state will do a great deal of healing and some good to the GA-Dangme State. On any day, a reparation is never too late!" he asserted.
Afriye noted that figures including General Ankrah, Professor Busia's wife Naa Morkor, General I.K. Acheampong, and entrepreneurs like Henry Djaba of TATA Brewery had invested in Makola and GA businesses, reinforcing the economic strength of GA women. "It was his belief that General Ankrah, Prof. Busia's wife, Naa Morkor and General I.K Acheampong invested in Makola and GA businesses like that of Henry Djaba of TATA Brewery, etc. and the growth of GA women," Afriye added.
He further claimed that the demolition by the PNDC regime stripped the GA State of its flourishing economic independence, plunging many into poverty and hardship. "Over time, some other noble men like Nii Aryee's Dad, who became the Paramount Chief of Nungua and lived in Tema at Sogeco Flat Block 426 and others on various platforms confirmed to me the good old story that the destruction of Makola by the PNDC jettisoned the GA state from a once flowery, economically independent position into one that can best be described as abject poverty and a painful livelihood in the hearts of especially the much older GA generation," he claimed in the post.
