Accra: Several persons affiliated with the New Patriotic Party (NPP) have been arrested or detained by security agencies since 2025. The arrests, mostly linked to allegations of false publication, offensive conduct, and comments made in the media or on social media, have sparked public debate and condemnation from sections of the opposition party.
According to Ghana Web, the arrests have become a contentious issue, with NPP figures being apprehended under various charges. Among those arrested is Baba Amando, the Sunyani East Communications Officer of the NPP. He was taken into custody on April 13, 2026, due to allegations of offensive conduct and false publication. The High Court of Ghana granted him bail, but he must report to the police bi-weekly.
Another notable arrest is that of Abronye DC, the Bono Regional Chairman of the NPP. He was rearrested on May 13, 2026, after initially being granted bail for similar charges of misinformation and offensive public statements. This rearrest has intensified discussions about the perceived targeting of NPP members.
David Essandoh, the Agona West Constituency Organiser, was arrested for a social media post declaring the return of 'dumsor', a term for power outages. His arrest adds to the list of NPP figures facing legal challenges.
In August 2025, Prince Ofori, known as Fante Comedy, was arrested alongside two others for allegedly issuing a death threat and publishing false news regarding a helicopter crash. He was later granted bail with significant financial conditions.
Alfred Kumi, another NPP supporter, faced arrest in May 2025 for making false claims on social media and during a radio interview. His petition to dissolve a committee investigating the Chief Justice led to his apprehension.
Journalist Gordon Asare Bediako was detained in April 2025 after making allegations against the Special Prosecutor. His claims of misconduct led to his arrest, although he was subsequently granted bail.
Media personality Okatakyie Afrifa experienced a brief detention in March 2025, but was released following legal intervention.
Mohammed Amadou Zakou was also detained in April 2025 after a Facebook post about the Vice President, and Akyenkwa Nana Kofi Asare faced arrest for on-air comments linking the President to a military helicopter crash.
The NPP has consistently condemned these arrests, which they view as politically motivated actions against their members.
