San juan: Former professional boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33, nearly 11 years after suffering a devastating brain injury during a bout that changed his life. Colon's father, Richard Colon, announced his son's death in a social media post, asking those who had supported the family over the years to continue keeping them in their prayers.
According to Ghana Web, Richard shared the news on Thursday, August 13, 2026, expressing his sorrow and noting that his son is now in a better place. Prichard Colon was born in Puerto Rico and quickly became recognized as one of boxing's promising young talents. The super welterweight boxer maintained an unbeaten record through his first 16 professional fights before facing Terrel Williams in a 2015 bout in Virginia.
Reports indicate that Colon was the favorite going into the contest, but the fight ended with him suffering a serious brain injury. During the bout, he repeatedly complained about blows to the back of his head. After the match, Colon experienced alarming symptoms and was taken to Inova Fairfax Hospital, where doctors performed emergency surgery to relieve pressure on his brain.
Colon spent more than 200 days in a coma following the surgery and was left with severe, permanent disabilities that required continuous care. Reflecting on his son's life, Richard Colon mentioned his efforts to fulfill Prichard's wishes, including the hope of taking him on holiday to Puerto Rico. Despite these efforts, the trip could not happen.
Richard expressed gratitude for the years of support and prayers, asking that people continue to keep the family in their thoughts during this difficult time.
