Ashanti: A fire outbreak has led to the temporary closure of the Pre-School department at Nintin R/C Primary School in the Mampong Municipality. The fire completely destroyed the facility's feeding structure, prompting authorities to close the department to prevent accidents.
According to Ghana News Agency, the cause of the fire remains unknown, causing concern among the community, especially since the building did not have an electricity supply. Mr. Johnson Nyamekye, a member of the Unit Committee of the Nintin Electoral Area, reported that attempts to reach the Mampong Municipal Station of the Ghana National Fire Service during the fire were unsuccessful. It was the efforts of local youth that eventually brought the fire under control.
Officials from the Municipal Directorate of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) arrived after a formal report was made by Assembly Member Mr. Nicholas Osei-Wusu. Mr. Mark Hammer Yeboah, the Municipal Director of NADMO, highlighted the severity of the disaster and stated that the building had lost its structural integrity and needed to be demolished.
The destroyed building served as the canteen and store for meal preparation under the School Feeding Programme, with food items worth about GHC 1,000.00 stocked just two days before the incident. Mr. Nicholas Osei Taylor, the Schools Improvement and Support Officer, explained the rationale behind the temporary closure of the Pre-School Department, although the duration of the closure remains uncertain.
In response to the incident, the Municipal NADMO has pledged to provide maize and rice as an interim measure to feed the pupils and plans to report to the Municipal Assembly for further support.
